SCENE 01 / AERIAL DRONE SERVICES
Aerial Drone Services
Licensed drone operators delivering cinematic aerial footage across Canada.
Aerial drone services deliver cinematic overhead and sweeping perspectives across Canada's vast wilderness and urban landscapes—from Vancouver's coastal mountains to Toronto's skyline. Drones provide cost-effective aerial coverage for establishing shots, wilderness sequences, and any production requiring elevated viewpoints over iconic Canadian scenery.
We coordinate fully licensed aerial drone services that comply with Transport Canada regulations, including RPAS pilot certificates and Special Flight Operations Certificates (SFOC) where required. Our team manages NAV CANADA airspace authorizations and coordination with local authorities to ensure your production captures stunning aerial footage safely and legally.

Transport Canada RPAS Advanced Operations pilots with SFOC for film, NAV CANADA coordination and Parks Canada national-park exclusions
Here is how the work lines up. Aerial drone services in Canada operate under Transport Canada's RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) framework codified in Part IX of the Canadian Aviation Rules. Our pilots hold the Advanced Operations certificate for controlled airspace, urban work and operations within five nautical miles of certified airports, plus the Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) for film and television operations that fall outside the standard rule set — night flying, beyond-visual-line-of-sight, multi-drone shows and flights above one hundred and twenty metres AGL.
The pilot roster draws on Pacific Backlot Services British Columbia, Helistar Toronto, Skyworks Vancouver, Sky Sport Aerial Calgary and the broader IATSE 891, 873 and 514 aerial unit pool that has flown on Star Trek Discovery, The Last of Us (Alberta), The Handmaid's Tale, Murdoch Mysteries and Yellowstone-adjacent Calgary productions.
Equipment runs DJI Inspire 3 with X9-8K Air gimbal and Zenmuse X7 Super 35 carry, Inspire 2 with X7 on the legacy senior tier, Mavic 3 Cine for compact ProRes 422 HQ work, and the DJI Matrice 350 RTK for heavy-lift and long-range industrial-grade payloads. FPV pilots fly aim-built five-inch and seven-inch quads with GoPro Hero 12 Black and DJI Avata 2 bodies for chase, proximity and through-the-gap shots.
Airspace coordination runs through NAV CANADA — the country's privatised air navigation service provider — using the NAV Drone app for pre-flight notifications, controlled-airspace requests and class C and D tower coordination. The Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal control zones each carry their own approach corridors and our flight planners draw paths that stay outside the runway approach surfaces or coordinate live with the tower for time-windowed flights.
Parks Canada national parks present the biggest planning constraint — drone flying is prohibited by default in Banff, Jasper, Pacific Rim, Gros Morne, Wood Buffalo and every other national park, with special-use permits needed and rarely granted outside science and conservation work, so productions wanting a Canadian Rockies aerial often fly the provincial Crown land bordering the park rather than inside the park boundary.
AFN First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) and Métis National Council consents apply when shooting over indigenous territory, and the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Iqaluit cold-weather protocols add battery-warming, hand-launch and reduced-flight-time planning for sub-minus-twenty conditions. Transport Canada drone insurance through Marsh Canada or AVION Insurance carries the third-party liability documentation needed for every commercial flight.
FAQ
Aerial Cinematography Expertise
What drone certifications do your pilots have?
All our pilots hold Canadian aviation authority certifications required for commercial drone operations. Many also hold certifications from other aviation authorities. We maintain full documentation including flight logs, insurance, and operational manuals.
Can you fly drones in cities like Toronto?
Urban drone flying in Canada requires special authorizations. Toronto has significant restricted airspace, but we can obtain permits for specific locations with advance notice. We handle all regulatory submissions and coordinate with authorities.
What cameras can you mount on drones?
We operate everything from integrated camera systems like DJI Inspire and Mavic lines to heavy-lift platforms carrying RED, ARRI Mini, and other cinema cameras. We match the platform to your image quality requirements and shot complexity.
Do you provide FPV drone services?
Yes, we have experienced FPV pilots for dynamic shots including chase sequences, indoor flying, and high-speed proximity work. Our FPV team uses purpose-built drones with cinema-quality cameras for broadcast-ready footage.
What about night aerial filming?
We're authorized for night drone operations with proper lighting systems, enhanced safety protocols, and appropriate certifications. Night flying requires additional planning and authorization, so please discuss requirements early.
How far in advance should we book?
Standard aerial shoots can often be arranged with 1-2 weeks notice. Complex operations requiring special authorizations, restricted airspace access, or multi-drone setups may need 3-4 weeks for proper planning and approval.
