LED Lighting Systems

Here is how the work lines up. LED lighting in Canada runs through a tight rental backbone — William F. White (Whites), Sim Digital, ARRI Rental Toronto and PS Production work collectively hold the country's deep cinema fixture inventory. Our gaffers spec from the standard senior package: ARRI SkyPanel S60-C, S120-C and S360-C as the soft-source workhorses, ARRI Orbiter with Dome+ and Open Face optics for harder beams, Aputure 600d Pro and 1200d Pro for HMI-replacement daylight punch, Nova P600c bi-colour panels for portrait-friendly key sources, Litepanels Gemini 2x1 and 1x1 for interview rigs, Cineo HS3 and Maverick for matched-tungsten warm wash, and Quasar Q-LED tubes plus Astera Titan and Helios tubes for the RGB tube-fixture work that drives Toronto's Distillery District and Vancouver's Gastown atmospheric nightwork.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Control runs through DMX over LumenRadio CRMX wireless, MagicQ and grandMA consoles for the larger Pixomondo Toronto virtual-production stage shoots, and the ARRI Lighting Control App, Sidus Link and Astera AsteraApp at the gaffer-and-spark scale. IATSE 891 Vancouver, 873 Toronto and 514 Quebec gaffers and best boys staff the trucks.

Canadian lighting work has two structural constraints that shape each package. The country runs on 120V/60Hz like the US, so fixtures and ballasts move freely across the border and HMIs run flicker-free at 23.976, 24, 29.97 and 59.94 fps without the European 50Hz roll-off — material because we frequently turn around US studio jobs on twenty-four-hour gear pulls.

Here is how the picture comes together. ISED (Fresh ideas, Science and Economic Development Canada) governs wireless DMX and CRMX planning, with the 2.4 GHz ISM band shared with production wireless audio, so our lighting and sound departments scan together before LumenRadio nodes go up in dense urban locations like Yonge-Dundas, Robson Street or the MELS Cité du cinéma backlot.

Here is what we have to work with. Cold-weather work between November and March across Quebec, Yukon and Nunavut introduces the second constraint — at minus twenty-five Celsius standard LED driver electronics throttle, so we spec ARRI Cold Pack accessories on SkyPanels, pre-warm Astera Titan tubes in heated cases, and keep V-mount and Gold-mount Anton/Bauer Cine VCLX battery stations inside the warming tent until the moment of camera. The Pixomondo Toronto The Volume LED stage handles in-camera virtual production for Star Trek Discovery and Strange New Worlds and integrates directly with our gaffer's DMX rig when the brief calls for stage-plus-location scene matching.
