Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Canada's thriving production industry — anchored by Vancouver's "Hollywood North" and Toronto's Pinewood Studios — supports a deep pool of skilled cinematographers across both English and French language shoots.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Pinewood Toronto Studios or on location in the Canadian Rockies, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility and gear sourced through top rental houses like William F. White and PS Production Services.

Canadian DPs from Roger Deakins and Greig Fraser through to the CSC/DCC bench

Here is how the work lines up. Canada's Director of Photography roster reads like a modern camera work Hall of Fame. Roger Deakins CBC ASC BSC shot Brokeback Mountain in the Alberta foothills and Sicario along the southern Canada border for Denis Villeneuve, then collected back-to-back Oscars for Blade Runner 2049 and 1917 — the Villeneuve creative partnership now defines a generation of Vancouver and Montreal production. Greig Fraser ACS ASC won the 2022 Camera work Oscar for Dune and followed with Dune Part Two and The Mandalorian's Pixomondo Toronto Volume work.

Here is how the picture comes together. Hoyte van Hoytema FSF NSC ASC shot major Tenet sequences in Vancouver, while André Turpin has photographed each Xavier Dolan feature from J'ai Tué Ma Mère through Mommy and Matthias & Maxime out of Montreal. The Quebec bench runs deep through Pierre Gill, Yves Bélanger (Dallas Buyers Club, Brooklyn), Nicolas Bolduc, and Sara Mishara, while the Toronto side draws on Steve Cosens (Sarah Polley regular), Glen MacPherson, Catherine Lutes, and the wider Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC, set 1957) and Directors of Camera work Canada (DCC) membership lists.

Here is what we have to work with. Engagements start with a brief, reference deck, and budget envelope, then narrow to curated showreels and direct conversations before booking is locked. Our DPs are fluent across ARRI Alexa 35 and Alexa Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, and RED V-Raptor 8K packages drawn from William F. White, Sim Digital, Panavision Canada, Keslow Camera, and ARRI Rental Toronto, with lens options spanning Atlas Orion anamorphics (the Dune look), Cooke S7/i, Angénieux Optimo zooms, and ARRI Signature Primes.

Here is the layout. First-AC and focus-puller crews come through IATSE 669 Camera BC and IATSE 667 Camera Quebec, with the Sheridan College, Vancouver Film School, and Ryerson (Toronto Metropolitan University) pipelines feeding the camera departments year after year. Pre-shoot days cover shot lists, lens tests, and tech scouts across Pinewood Toronto Studios, MELS Cité du Cinéma Montreal, Vancouver's Bridge and Mammoth Stages, the Alberta Rockies, and Quebec heritage zones. Bilingual EN/FR teamwork is standard for inbound and Quebec work, CRA federal and provincial PSTC / OPSTC / BCPSTC / QPSTC tax credit forms is handled inside the same camera-department contract, and ATA carnet planning through CBSA clears imported gear cleanly.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Canada?

Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Canada, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Canadian DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.

Productions in Canada that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
