SCENE 01 / LIGHTING MODIFIERS

Lighting Modifiers

Professional light shaping tools for your Canadian production.

Scroll

Lighting modifiers shape, diffuse, and control the quality of light on set. Softboxes, scrims, gels, flags, and diffusion frames transform raw fixture output into the nuanced illumination that cinematographers need to create depth, mood, and natural-looking light in any scene.

We provide access to comprehensive lighting modifier packages including diffusion materials, color correction gels, and light-shaping tools. Our team sources these accessories from local suppliers and coordinates delivery alongside your lighting fixtures, ensuring your grip and electric departments have everything needed on set.

Diffusion, flag, frame, and bounce stocks staged through William F. White and Sim Digital grip cages in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal

Here is how the work lines up. Lighting-modifier rental in Canada draws on the William F. White Global grip cages across Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax, and Winnipeg as the national IATSE-signatory anchor; Sim Digital Toronto and Vancouver for the integrated camera-grip-electric packages tied to series and feature production; MELS Equipment in Montreal for the Quebec stage and Old Montreal exterior work; and the Aves Camera Calgary and Halifax IATSE 849 regional cages.

Across that network our team builds the full diffusion, frame, flag, and bounce stack the key grip and gaffer are working from — Matthews and Avenger C-stands and combos, 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, 12x12, and 20x20 Lite Grid and Westcott Scrim Jim frames, Magic Cloth and 1/4 and 1/2 grid cloth, full silk, 1/2 silk, and double-net textiles, the Floppy and Black-Side flag families (solids, cutters, and the full net ladder from open weave to double), Ultrabounce and Griffolyn for the big-bounce setups, duvetyn for negative fill, and beadboard and foam-core in the run-out cases for the small-room work.

Canadian conditions and city geography shape the modifier conversation in exact ways. Chinaballs and the soft practical pool come up constantly on Vancouver alley and Gastown laneway fills, Toronto laneway and Distillery District warmth shots, and the Quebec winter snow-bounce that lights up an entire street with a single 20x20 Ultrabounce overhead. Westcott Scrim Jim kits in the 6x6 and 8x8 sizes ship with full diffusion and silver-and-white reflector sets for run-and-gun commercial work.

The dedicated stage cages at Pinewood Toronto and MELS Montreal hold the 20x20 frame stocks the bigger features pull on day one. William F. White and Reel Films grip cages keep a lightning-fast turnaround between Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal hubs so an unplanned overhead need lands within four to six hours through the William F. White trucking pipeline. The IATSE 873 (Toronto), 891 (Vancouver), and CST 514 (Montreal) key-grip pool prep the order on-cage before truck loadout.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What softbox brands do you carry?

We stock softboxes from Chimera, DoPchoice, Snapbag, and others in sizes from small on-camera units to large 8x8 and beyond. DoPchoice Snapbags and Snapgrids are particularly popular for their speed of setup.

What sizes of diffusion frames do you have?

We carry frames from 4x4 feet through 20x20 feet in various configurations. Standard sizes include 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, 12x12, and 20x20. We stock multiple diffusion types for each size.

What diffusion materials are available?

We offer a full range including 1/4, 1/2, full, and double diffusion, plus grid cloths, muslin, and specialty materials. Each provides different softness and light transmission characteristics.

Do you provide reflectors and bounce?

Yes, we have shiny boards (mirrors), beadboards, foam core, Griffolyn, and specialty reflective materials. Bounce is essential for adding fill and redirecting light, especially on location.

What about flags and negative fill?

We carry complete flag sets including solids, cutters, and nets in all standard sizes. Black materials like duvetyn are available for negative fill, which is crucial for creating contrast.

Can you provide large overhead setups?

Yes, we supply complete butterfly and overhead systems including frames, textiles, and all necessary rigging. Large overheads are essential for soft ambient light on exteriors and large interior spaces.

Productions in Canada that need this often pair it with HMI & Tungsten Lights and Lighting Equipment Rental for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gaffer & Lighting Services and Cinema Lens Kits.
